Start your day with Jesus

Habit #1

Start your day with Jesus. Make spending time with God your priority this month. The first and most important habit to put in your life is to start your day with Jesus. When I started making my time with the Lord a priority, it was life-changing for me. This is how to start your day in a way that your mind will be focused on Jesus first thing in the morning.

Several years ago I wanted to draw closer to the Lord. So, I began to create a new habit to make spending time with the Lord first thing in the morning, my priority. In this post, I will give you five small tips to help you make this your priority as well. Try this habit of starting your day with God and it will bring you closer to Him. Also, it will start your day out in the right direction.

1. Wake up Early

Wake up early to start your day with God. Set your alarm with enough time that you can start your day spending time with the Lord. Starting first thing in the morning with God sets up your day on a positive note. Your thoughts will be focused on the truth and you will be filled with gratitude and love. It makes it so you can handle much more in your day with the right attitude. The Bible even refers to starting your day with the Lord.

Psalm 5:3 says “In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.

Psalm 119:147 says “I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in your word.”

Mark 1:35 says “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He departed and went out to a desolate place, and there He prayed.

2. Avoid Distractions

Avoid all distractions. Stay away from all electronics before you spend time with the Lord, this especially includes your phone. In the time we are now living in screens create such a distraction in our lives that it will make it harder to focus on God.

3. Create a Special Space

Create a special space where you can be alone with the Lord. A place where you can relax and focus on your time with God. You can create a special place in your home or just a location in your home that you enjoy. It can also be a place outside of your home, such as a porch or bench in your yard. Also spending time outside going for a walk or just walking around outside is a great way to spend time with Jesus.

4. Look forward to it

Make this time something you look forward to every day, make it special. Just like any other important relationship you have, you look forward to spending time with them. God is the most important relationship we all have, so wake up with anticipation to spend time with your Heavenly Father.

5. Be consistent

Be consistent. Being consistent will make this a habit and over time you won’t even need to remind yourself to do this. It will be a part of your day that you look forward to, which in turn will make getting up in the morning an enjoyable thing.

What should I do during my quiet time with Jesus?

You may not know exactly what to do when spending time with God. If that is you, here are some ideas. Most importantly though, ask God what He is leading you to do.

  • Pray– this is most important, it will deepen your relationship with God.
  • Praise – I do this during prayer but tell God what you love about Him.
  • Gratitude – Be grateful for your life and all that God has given you.
  • Worship – Play worship music
  • Read the Bible – You can read this cover to cover or read a chapter or even a paragraph at a time.
  • Journal – You can write whatever comes to mind. Listening to God during your prayer time and then journaling what you feel the Holy Spirit saying to you. You can also journal prayers and Bible verses.
  • Read a Devotional – There are many devotionals out there that can help you with spending time with the Lord every day.
  • Take a walk or be outside – this is how I began spending time with God many years ago. It is a wonderful way to pray and feel God’s presence. It is my favorite way to spend time with Jesus.
  • Sit in His presence – During your prayer time just sit and listen and be still.

Why should you create this habit?

Why should you create this habit? How will it benefit you? James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” Spending time with the Lord every day draws you closer to Him and He will draw closer to you. You will learn to hear from God and you will learn to discern His voice.

Romans 12:2 says ” Do not Conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” Creating this habit will help us to renew our minds and bring transformation into our lives. As our minds are transformed, we will be able to overflow with the love and joy of Jesus like we never thought possible. It will also lead us to find what God’s will is for our lives and His purpose in our lives.

Making this a habit in your life, will bless you far greater than you can ever imagine. Try it out and I would love to hear how this habit blesses you. Leave me a comment if you are new to this habit or let me know if this is something you have already made a habit. God’s Blessings in your New Year!
