Day 18: Speak Life Over Yourself
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21 NIV
Today’s Beautiful Truth
Have you ever stopped to pay attention to the words you speak over yourself?
What do you say when you look in the mirror? What do you tell yourself when you make a mistake? Or what thoughts run through your mind when something doesn’t go as planned?
Sometimes the words we speak over ourselves become the very beliefs that shape how we see our lives.
“I’m not good enough.”
“I’ll never change.”
“I’m too old to start something new.”
“I always mess things up.”
“I’ll never get where I want to be.”
We may say these things without giving them much thought, but our words matter. They influence what we believe, how we feel, the decisions we make, and the actions we take.
If we continually tell ourselves that we cannot do something, eventually we may stop trying altogether.
But what happens when we begin speaking life instead?
What happens when we intentionally replace those negative thoughts with God’s truth?
Instead of saying, “I’m not good enough,” we remind ourselves that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Instead of saying, “I can’t change,” we remember that God renews our minds and transforms us.
Or, instead of saying, “I’m not capable,” we remember that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
This isn’t about pretending everything is perfect or simply repeating positive words until life changes. It’s about aligning our thoughts, words, and beliefs with the truth of God’s Word.
What we believe about ourselves shapes how we show up in life.
Be → Do → Have
I want you to consider a principle as we continue this journey toward a beautiful life.
So often, we approach life backward.
We think:
Have → Do → Be
When I have more money, then I’ll feel successful.
When I lose the weight, then I’ll feel confident.
Or when my house is organized, I’ll feel peaceful.
When my circumstances change, then I’ll finally be happy.
We make our identity, confidence, and happiness dependent on something we don’t have yet.
But what if we turned that thinking around?
Be → Do → Have
First, we become intentional about who we are and who God created us to be.
Then, we begin making choices and taking actions that reflect that identity.
And over time, we begin experiencing the fruit of those choices.
For example:
- Be: I am a woman who values her health and honors God with her body.
- Do: I make intentional choices to nourish my body, move, and rest.
- Have: Then I begin experiencing the benefits of healthier habits and greater well-being.
Or consider your home:
- Be: I am a woman who creates an atmosphere of peace.
- Do: I practice patience, speak kindly, and intentionally care for my home.
- Have: Then I begin cultivating a more peaceful home environment.
And perhaps most importantly, consider your relationship with God:
- Be: I am a daughter of God, loved, forgiven, and accepted through Christ.
- Do: I spend time with Him, seek His wisdom, and walk in obedience.
- Have: Then I experience the fruit of a life rooted in Him.
Notice that we aren’t trying to earn our identity through what we do or what we have.
Our identity begins with what God says about us.
We don’t have to wait until we accomplish something to become worthy, loved, or valuable.
We are already loved by Him.
Romans 12:2 reminds us that transformation happens through the renewing of our minds. As our thinking changes, our choices and actions can begin to change, too.
This is where restoration begins.
When we stop allowing old beliefs, past experiences, and negative words to define us and begin agreeing with God’s truth, we create room for a different way of living.
Today, I want to encourage you to become more intentional about the words you speak over yourself.
Speak life. Speak truth. And speak God’s promises.
You may be surprised how much begins to change when you stop agreeing with the things that have been holding you back.
Pause & Reflect
Take a few moments today to examine the words and beliefs you carry.
- What do I regularly say about myself?
- Are my words building me up or tearing me down?
- Have I allowed past mistakes, disappointments, or other people’s opinions to define who I am?
- What does God’s Word say about who I really am?
- Am I living from the identity God has given me, or am I waiting for something to happen before I believe I can be that person?
Be honest with yourself. Sometimes we don’t even realize how much our own words have been influencing our lives.
Today’s Beautiful Step
Today, let’s put Be → Do → Have into practice.
Take a journal or a piece of paper and write down three areas of your life where you desire change.
Perhaps it’s your health, your home, your relationships, your finances, or your relationship with God.
For each area, write:
1. BE: Who do I want to be, based on God’s truth?
2. DO: What small, intentional actions will reflect that identity?
3. HAVE: What fruit or results would I like to see grow from those choices?
Now, choose one negative statement you have been speaking over yourself and replace it with a truth from God’s Word.
For example:
Instead of: “I’ll never get my life together.”
Speak: “God is working in me, renewing my mind and guiding my steps.”
Instead of: “I’m not enough.”
Speak: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and my worth is found in Christ.”
Write your new declaration somewhere you will see it throughout the day.
Begin speaking it, believing it, and allowing God’s truth to shape the way you live.
Today’s Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your Word and for the truth of who You say I am. Forgive me for the times I have spoken negatively about myself and allowed discouragement, fear, and past experiences to shape my beliefs.
Thank You for helping me become more aware of the words that come out of my mouth and the thoughts I allow to take root in my mind.
Renew my thinking. Teach me to see myself through Your eyes and to stop agreeing with anything that contradicts Your truth.
Thank you for helping me live from the identity You have given me rather than waiting for circumstances, accomplishments, or possessions to make me feel worthy.
Thank you that my words bring life, encouragement, hope, and peace. May my thoughts, words, and actions reflect the woman You created me to be.
Thank You that I am loved, chosen, forgiven, and never alone.
In Jesus name, Amen.
Carry This With You
You don’t have to wait until you have everything you want to become the woman God created you to be.
You don’t have to wait until your circumstances are perfect, your home is organized, your finances are in order, or your body looks a certain way.
Begin with who God says you are.
Let that truth influence what you think, what you speak, and how you live.
Remember:
BE who God created you to be.
DO what aligns with that truth.
HAVE the fruit that grows from living intentionally.
Your words matter. Your thoughts matter. And the truth you choose to believe can influence the direction of your life.
Today, choose to speak life over yourself.
Blessings!
Danelle
